That's the only explanation I can come up with. Any band that can take a song the power lineup of The Temptations did and make it better is on a level few can reach.

Not really.

There are a ton of cover songs where the original artist takes a back seat to whoever covers it.

See SRV's version of "Little Wing" originally by Jimi Hendrix.
