In order to not drift the other "Remake Movies" thread further from what's intended, here's an idea.

What actors or actresses would Hollywood have a hard time replacing or cannot be replaced. Such as:

Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird

George C. Scott as Patton in Patton

Heath Ledger as The Joker in The Dark Night

Kevin Spacey as John Doe in Seven

R. Lee Ermey as Gunny Hartman in Full Metal Jacket

Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind

Sigourney Weaver as Ripley in the Alien franchise

Brief list to get the conversation started. What roles and played by whom would be impossible to replicate with the current crop of actors and actresses?

Malcolm McDowell as Alex in A Clockwork Orange

Samuel L. Jackson as Jules in Pulp Fiction

Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke (and The Hustler, IMO)

Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs

Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates in Psycho (sorry Vince Vaughn, stick to comedy)

Arnold S. as The Terminator

Sly Stallone as Rocky

Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones

And this is just a personal preference, but I thought Denzel hit a grand slam in Training Day. Not sure I could see anyone ever playing that role better at this point.

Basically any good movie with Arnold.

Chris Farley was my hero as a teen and he was supposed to play the Cable Guy, but that would be a completely different movie than the Jim Carrey one. I'd love to see the CF version, but Jim Carrey is the only person who could make that movie the way it is.

Great list. Forgot about Hopkins as Hannibal.

Little known fact, but did you know Tom Selleck was originally supposed to be Indiana Jones?

For more recent roles Ryan Reynolds and RDJr simply are Wade Wilson/Tony Stark.

Robert Shaw as Quint

Clint Eastwood as Harry Callahan

Bruce Willis as John McClain

Solid nominations above slowing down my thinking of others so far.

Edit

I know Steve Martin tried but Inspector Clouseau is and will always be Peter Sellers

Bruce Campbell as Ash

Kevin Spacey Kizer Soze

Jeff Bridges as The Dude

Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden

Yep. Hard to picture that. Christopher Walken was also George Lucas' initial selection for Han Solo. Imagine how different Harrison Ford's career might have turned out had those two simply said yes.

Movies

Morgan Freeman as Red in Shawshank Redemption

Tom Hanks as Forest Gump

Christopher Lloyd as Dr. Emmett Brown in Back To the Future

Al Pacino as Tony Montana in Scarface

Shows
Bryan Cranston as Walter White in Breaking Bad (Hard to believe that Vince wanted Matthew Broderick and John Cusack to play Walter White.)

Picture Richard Gere as Detective John McClain because that's who it was originally supposed to be.

They ****ing dodged a bullet by rectifying that mistake.

A few others in that category.

Johnny Depp as Ferris Bueller

John Travolta was almost Forest Gump.

Pretty Woman was originally offered to Molly Ringwald.

But the winner is...OJ Simpson was in the running to play The Terminator.
