NBC released their 2016 Fall Schedule ahead of tomorrows Upfront!

NBC unveiled its schedule for the start of the 2016-17 season, which includes the return of comedy to Thursday nights, a move of “Blindspot” to Wednesdays and new dramas on Monday and Tuesday nights.

The network will add just three new shows — “Timeless,” “This Is Us” and “The Good Place” — to the fall schedule, while holding the majority of its dozen new scripted series for early 2017. The rest of the new series roster includes dramas “Chicago Justice,” “The Blacklist: Redemption,” “Midnight, Texas,” “Emerald City” and “Taken” and comedies “Great News,” “Powerless” and “Trial & Error.”

NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt says that even with the Summer Olympics as a promotional platform, NBC didn’t want to add a lot of shows to the fall schedule at the expense of the relative stability of the lineup.

“Just because we have the Olympics doesn’t mean we wanted to dump a schedule that was working,” he says. “… I’m happy we don’t have to do more in the fall. I couldn’t be happier, actually.”

Greenblatt also says “Taken” will air on Mondays with the spring cycle of “The Voice.” “Little Big Shots,” “Chicago Justice” and “Shades of Blue” will air on Sundays after the NFL season ends. Other midseason scheduling isn’t set yet.

Fox releases both their Fall & Winter/Spring schedules ahead of tomorrow's Upfront presentation.

FOX has set its schedule for 2016-17, and like NBC did with its slate, it’s launching a small number of shows in the fall and loading up for early 2017.

That’s not a big surprise, considering the network is entering its first season without “American Idol” since 2002 and needs a lot of programming to fill the hole. Just three new shows (“Lethal Weapon,” “The Exorcist” and “Son of Zorn”) will debut in the fall, along with a special presentation of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” airing in October.

A whopping nine newcomers — or eight, if you don’t count the return of “Prison Break” as a new show — will get winter or spring berths, with several sharing timeslots.

The network also says “24: Legacy” will premiere after the Super Bowl in February before settling into Monday nights.

As we predicted, given the volume of ABC comedy series for next season, the network will be expanding its Tuesday comedy block to two hours, pushing Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to the 10 PM hour where ABC had had a hard time finding a drama that sticks. ABC renewed 8 comedies, including six single-camera shows that air on Wednesday and Tuesday, and picked up 4 new series – all single-camera.

Being the most successful network in adding solid new comedy performers in the past couple of years with The Goldbergs, Black-ish, and Fresh Off the Boat, ABC already had more comedy series on the fall schedule than any other network last year. This year, its comedy footprint is even larger – 5 hours, including the Friday multi-camera block, compared to 3.5 hours for Fox and one hour for NBC.

Veteran The Middle is being transplanted to anchor the expanded Tuesday comedy block, serving as a lead-in for American Housewife (fka The Second Fattest Housewife in Westport). To accommodate the new duo, Fresh Off the Boat and The Real O’Neals will slide an hour to 9 PM.

ABC’s hottest comedy pilot Speechless is getting a spot in ABC’s signature Wednesday comedy block. The only newbie in the lineup will air at 8:30 PM, behind The Goldbergs, which, after blossoming behind The Middle for two seasons, is being assigned a tentpole position.

On the drama side, the network’s “gap” strategy, favored by ABC entertainment president Channing Dungey’s predecessor Paul Lee will not be “as big”, Dungey said during a press call, with the gaps in the seasons of serialized dramas getting shorter.

Hot drama pilot Conviction will replace Castle on Mondays, getting a sizable viewership lead-in from Dancing with the Stars. “We think this is the procedural we were looking for,” Dungey said. The Kiefer Sutherland drama Designated Survivor will succeed Nashville in the ABC Wednesday 10 PM slot.

On Thursday, ABC is going for consistency in keeping The Catch on the bench, so Shondaland’s TGIT can return in midseason with the same lineup as this spring, Grey’s, Scandal and The Catch. For now, there are no plans for Shondaland’s fifth series, midseason period saga Still Star-Crossed, to join the Thursday lineup. Additionally, ABC brass decided to use the delay in Scandal‘s return to get a new show launched behind Grey’s on Thursday.

Secrets & Lies, originally set to return for a second season this past midseason, was held for fall and will air in the same slot its first installment did — Sunday 9 PM — with a new lead-out, Quantico, which is staying put. In midseason, the 10-episode Secrets & Lies will be succeeded by new time-travel drama Time After Time, which will follow Once Upon Time to create a two-hour fantasy block on Sunday.

As Frank starts teaching his principled trainee the way of the streets, where the ends often justify the means, they form an uneasy alliance that will irrevocably change the course of both their lives. Sadie is hiding her growing feelings from everyone, including her close friend and colleague, Albert Cobb (Dulé Hill), who thinks he knows everything about her. Working on other cases at the practice is Cameron Wirth (Laverne Cox), a transgender Ivy League graduate who fights passionately for her clients since she’s experienced injustice first hand; Tiffany Simon (Dreama Walker), a second-year associate who is quickly learning the ropes from Wirth; and Nick (Kobi Libii), a former felon who earned his degree while serving time. They all consider it a privilege to work for Isaiah Roth (Elliott Gould), a revered legal lion and “lefty” legend, whose approval is their holy grail. Sadie’s decision to become involved with her client could put her career, as well as her happiness, at risk if Billy is found guilty, which means she needs to work all the harder to prove reasonable doubt, even if she has some herself. Tony Phelan & Joan Rater, Emmy Award winner Adam Bernstein, Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman are executive producers for CBS Television Studios. Bernstein directed the pilot.

In a nutshell, the CW’s schedule is a superhero (or occasional vampire) drama at 8 PM, followed by another show.

Because of the unprecedented total number of scripted series the CW picked up for next season – 11 returning and four new, including Supergirl — its midseason bench is deeper than ever, with The Originals held back for the first time, along with new Archie comics drama Riverdale as well as The 100, iZombie, The Originals and Reign.

The CW’s most established superhero series, flagship The Flash and Arrow, both have been recruited to launch new series, romance No Tomorrow behind The Flash and the Frequency adaptation behind Arrow.

Utility player Supernatural is on the move again, relocating from Wednesday to Thursday behind DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

Rachel Bloom’s praised but modestly rated Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is moving from Monday to Friday. While the new night is less trafficked, the show will have a lead-in from veteran The Vampire Diaries after serving as the Monday 8 PM opening act last season.

As usual, the CW will start its fall launches in October.

2016-17 SERIES DESCRIPTIONS

NEW COMEDY

NO TOMORROW
— Evie Callahan (Tori Anderson), a risk-averse quality-control assessor, appreciates order. Whenever she’s making a list, “make a list” is both the first thing on it and the first thing crossed off. Such a regimented life has its drawbacks. Her on-again/off-again romance with the sweet, but soft-spoken Timothy (Jesse Rath) has sputtered out. Her career has stalled. Her boss, Deirdre (Amy Pietz), a petty tyrant with breath that could kill a plant, laughs off her ambitions. Then Evie meets charming, free-spirited Xavier Holliday (Joshua Sasse), and the attraction is immediate and electric. He brings a jolt of joyful, rollicking romance into her life. Xavier encourages Evie to carpe that diem, because it’s more fun that way and because, well, the apocalypse is, you know, nigh. He believes humankind has a mere eight months and twelve days until a runaway asteroid smacks us all into stardust. That’s why he made an Apocalyst – a tally of every last thing he wants to do before the world goes kaput. So with the help of her friends – Hank (Jonathan Langdon), a diehard conspiracy theorist, and Kareema (Sarayu Blue), a droll nihilist – Evie must decide whether Xavier is certifiable and whether that even matters, if being with him means living her life more fully. Based on the International Emmy-nominated Brazilian format from Grupo Globo, NO TOMORROW is a romantic comedy with the ultimate ticking clock. NO TOMORROW is from CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television in association with Electus, with executive producers Corinne Brinkerhoff (“American Gothic,” “Jane The Virgin,” “The Good Wife”), Maggie Friedman (“Witches of East End”) and Ben Silverman (“Jane The Virgin,” “The Office”).

NEW DRAMA

FREQUENCY
— Detective Raimy Sullivan (Peyton List) has always wanted to prove that she is nothing like her father. In 1996, when Raimy was eight years old, NYPD Officer Frank Sullivan (Riley Smith) left Raimy and her mother, Julie (Devin Kelley), behind when he went deep undercover, got corrupted, and got himself killed. Or so the story has always gone. Few people knew about the secret undercover sting operation Frank was really charged with, led by Stan Moreno (Anthony Ruivivar), who has now risen to Deputy Chief of Police. Frank’s former partner, Lieutenant Satch Reyna (Mekhi Phifer), is now Raimy’s mentor and friend, and he has urged her to let go of the hurt and anger she still feels about Frank’s disappearance and death, but the old pain still lingers. Raimy can barely bring herself to discuss Frank, even with her devoted boyfriend, Daniel (Daniel Bonjour), or her childhood friend, Gordo (Lenny Jacobson). Now, twenty years later, Raimy is stunned when a voice suddenly crackles through her father’s old, long-broken ham radio – it’s Frank, somehow transmitting over the airwaves and through the decades from 1996. They’re both shocked and confused, but Raimy shakes Frank to the core when she warns him that the secret sting he is undertaking will lead to his death. Armed with that knowledge, Frank survives the attempt on his life. But changing history has dramatically affected Raimy’s life in the present – and there have been tragic consequences. Separated by twenty years, father and daughter have reunited on a frequency only they can hear, but can they rewrite the story of their lives without risking everyone they love? FREQUENCY is from Warner Bros. Television in association with Lin Pictures, with executive producers Jeremy Carver (“Supernatural”), Toby Emmerich (“The Notebook” feature film), John Rickard (“Horrible Bosses”), Dan Lin (“The LEGO™ Movie,” “Sherlock Holmes”) and Jennifer Gwartz (“Veronica Mars”).

MIDSEASON

RIVERDALE
— As a new school year begins, the town of Riverdale is reeling from the recent, tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom — and nothing feels the same… Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) is still the all-American teen, but the summer’s events made him realize that he wants to pursue a career in music — not follow in his dad’s footsteps—despite the sudden end of his forbidden relationship with Riverdale’s young music teacher, Ms.Grundy (Sarah Habel). Which means Archie doesn’t have anyone who will mentor him — certainly not singer Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), who is only focused on her band, the soon-to-be-world-famous *****cats. It’s all weighing heavily on Archie’s mind — as is his fractured friendship with budding writer and fellow classmate Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse). Meanwhile, girl-next-door Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) is anxious to see her crush Archie after being away all summer, but she’s not quite ready to reveal her true feelings to him. And Betty’s nerves – which are hardly soothed by her overbearing mother Alice (Mädchen Amick) aren’t the only thing holding her back. When a new student,Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), arrives in town from New York with her mother Hermione (Marisol Nichols), there’s an undeniable spark between her and Archie, even though Veronica doesn’t want to risk her new friendship with Betty by making a play for Archie. And then there’s Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch)…Riverdale’s Queen Bee is happy to stir up trouble amongst Archie, Betty, and Veronica, but Cheryl is keeping secrets of her own. What, exactly, is she hiding about the mysterious death of her twin brother, Jason? Riverdale may look like a quiet, sleepy town, but there are dangers in the shadows… Based on the characters from Archie Comics, RIVERDALE is from Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios, in association with Berlanti Productions, with executive producers Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (“Supergirl,” “Glee”), Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl,” “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”), Sarah Schechter (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl,” “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”) and Jon Goldwater (Archie Comics).

After a flurry of announcements (and some retractions) by The Vampire Diaries cast members in the past couple of months that the upcoming eighth season will be the series’ last, the CW president Mark Pedowitz said that “no determination” has been made yet.

“In my dreams it isn’t, but we will see how the audience will react,” he said. Also not set yet is the size of the show’s eighth season. That will be done in the next few weeks.

Pedowitz said he has “a rough idea” where Supergirl will go creatively in Season 2. He and executive producer Greg Berlanti will sit down next week to discuss that further. Tonally, no significant changes are expected in the series’ move from CBS to the CW.

“They had a pretty successfsupergirl flash crossover march 28ul series,” Pedowitz said. “The fact that it’s moving where it should’ve been in the first place is not going to have a big effect.”

Ratings-wise, Pedowitz said the expectation is that Supergirl will draw “a little less” viewership than it did at CBS, where it averaged close to 10 million viewers in Live+7. “I believe it will be a strong performer for the CW, I believe it will be one of our top three performers, and I am confident that it will bring some of its audience on CBS.”

One of the first orders of business: Supergirl will be employed in the next annual CW crossover in December. Pedowitz declined to elaborate whether it will be a four-night event with Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow and DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow — all conveniently airing on four consecutive nights — but noted it will be the network’s “biggest ever” crossover. He will reveal details at the network’s upfront presentation later this morning.

PSupergirledowiz said the CW’s discussions for Supergirl started a week and a half ago. In addition to the move to the CW, the series also is relocating production to Vancouver. Pedowitz was asked whether co-star Calista Flockhart will remain on the show as a regular with the location change. “We are very happy to have her,” he said. “There are ongoing discussions. We are thrilled that she wants to continue on the show, and we are thrilled to have her in whatever capacity.”

I had heard that there was an idea for Flockhart to fly to Vancouver periodically, filming scenes for multiple episodes at a time.

In regards to new series Riverdale, based on the Archie comics characters, Pedowitz said that it’s a “more adult version.” It is Secrets Of A Small Town in an essence,” he said, noting the “tremendous adult presence on the show. “It’s a much more layered piece.”

Just days after announcing their fall schedule. Fox has already been making some changes.

FOX has made a few tweaks to its previously announced schedule for 2016-17, the most notable of which is moving new drama “Pitch” up from fall to spring.

The show, about the first female pitcher (Kylie Bunbury) in the major leagues, will air at 9 p.m. ET/PT in the fall. That in turn bumps the final season of “Bones” back to a winter premiere, also on Thursday.

“Prison Break,” which had been scheduled to air on Thursdays after “Bones” ended, now moves to the spring Tuesday spot vacated by “Pitch

A teaser for “Pitch” played at the network’s upfront presetation has been well-received, and airing the show in fall will have a natural tie-in with FOX’s coverage of the MLB playoffs and World Series. On the flip side, a good portion of the show will then play out after baseball season ends.
