24 is returning!

Fox has given a 12 episode series order to 24: Legacy.

It reboots the 24 franchise with brand new characters & cast, from creators Manny Coto & Evan Katz.

The 24: Legacy pilot, starring Corey Hawkins, Miranda Otto and Jimmy Smits, had been a frontrunner from the start. It extends one of Fox’s most popular and lucrative drama brands with global recognition, it is done by key creative auspices from the original series, and it is based on a script that had the network brass raving about when they got it last December. The filmed pilot had been garnering strong early buzz over the past few weeks.

Written by 24 veterans Coto and Katz and directed by Stephen Hopkins (who helmed the original 24 pilot), 24: Legacy centers on military hero Eric Carter (Hawkins) whose trouble follows him back to the U.S. – compelling him to ask CTU for help. The show chronicles an adrenaline-fueled race against the clock to stop a devastating terrorist attack on United States soil – in the real-time format that the original series became famous for. Like limited series 24: Live Another Day, 24: Legacy will run for 12 episodes a season instead of the 24 the original series produced each year, so there will be some time jumps in the 24-hour window covered by each installment.

This is the third 24 series on Fox. The original, which ran for 8 seasons, earned a best drama series Emmy Award. Limited series 24: Live Another Day aired in 2014. 24: Legacy is the first 24 series without original star Sutherland. His involvement in the new series will be strictly behind the scenes; he won’t be reprising his 24 character of Jack Bauer. Sutherland currently stars in the new ABC drama Designated Survivor.

No 24: Legacy on Fox until at least the fall of 2018 if ever!

...star Corey Hawkins is currently on Broadway doing Six Degrees of Separation and that’s stopped the clock on more 24 for now at least. While mentioning more 24 could be “in the mix,” Newman told a Monday morning conference call that Hawkin’s “schedule won’t allow consideration for the fall.”

Coming off a strong post-Super Bowl debut before hitting tepid ratings for most of its run, which ended on April 17, the new 24 was still well praised by Fox execs today. “We were so happy with the creative on that show,” Walden made a point of saying “We think Corey Hawkins did a great job,” she added, “replacing Jack Bauer was no easy feat.”

Super spy Bauer was of course the character that Emmy winner Kiefer Sutherland played on the real time running 24 from its debut in 2001 to its Season 8 end in 2010 and the limited series 24: Live Another Day in 2014. Now on ABC’s Designated Survivor playing POTUS, Sutherland was not on-screen for the Manny Coto and Evan Katz created spin-off, though he did serve as an EP.

Giving some further hope to more 24, the Fox execs also said Monday that they wanted to sit down with executive producer Howard Gordon to see where the franchise could perhaps go next – if at all.

Highly unlikely 24 Legacy will ever come back. Corey Hawkins character was no Jack Bauer and honestly the writers of the show couldn't have made worse decisions. His Broadway run is only 15 weeks and started April 25th. He'll be ready to return to The Walking Dead in the end of August and they film from May to November.
