‘Supergirl’ Drama From Greg Berlanti & Ali Adler Lands CBS Series Commitment

‘Supergirl’ Drama From Greg Berlanti & Ali Adler Lands CBS Series Commitment

Supergirl, Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler’s drama based on the DC female superhero, has landed at CBS with a series commitment. The deal closed last night, a day after the project was taken out to the broadcast networks on Wednesday. I hear the size of commitment eclipses the series commitment DC Batman drama Gotham got at Fox last fall. Warner Bros. TV is producing with studio-based Berlanti Prods.

The Supergirl character was created by writer Otto Binder and designed by artist Al Plastino in 1959. Of the several women who have assumed the caped girl persona in the comics, the Berlanti-Adler series will feature the most popular one: Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, who shares his super powers and vulnerability to Kryptonite. Unlike WBTV’s long-running Superman series Smallville, which focused on the superhero’s journey up to acquiring the powers and becoming Superman, Supergirl starts with Kara beginning to use her abilities.

Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. Berlanti and Adler will write the script and executive produce with Berlanti Prods.’ Sarah Schechter. Also closely involved in the development of the project has been DC Entertainment’s chief creative officer Geoff Johns.

CBS may look as a surprising home for a younger-skewing superhero drama, it was the only broadcast network without a comic book series. Additionally, CBS has been making a push in female-lead dramas with Extant, Madam Secretary and CSI: Cyber joining staple The Good Wife.

There will be five DC/WBTV series on the air this coming season: Gotham on Fox, the CW’s Arrow, The Flash and iZombie on the CW, and Constantine on NBC. With the Supergirl deal, WBTV has successfully targeted every available broadcast network as ABC is considered off-limits because of its corporate ties with Marvel, producer of its series Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter.

Supergirl expands Berlanti’s superhero series footprint. He also is behind popular CW drama Arrow and its upcoming offshoot The Flash. Additionally, Berlanti has new NBC crime dramedy The Mysteries Of Laura, which opened well on Wednesday.

This marks Berlanti’s second high-profile sale to CBS this year, along with supernatural procedural The Things They Left Behind, which has a put pilot commitment. His company also has conspiracy thriller Blindspot set at NBC.

Adler, who previously worked with Berlanti on his superhero-themed ABC drama No Ordinary Family, co-created the NBC comedy The New Normal. She and Berlanti are repped by WME.

There has been a push to get more female superhero characters in comic books and on the big and small screens. Marvel has a Jessica Jones series in pre-production at Netflix.

My first two questions!!

1) Do we get an suit? (Preferably the one that isn't the New-52 one!)

2) Does cousin Clark get mentioned? How about Jonathan & Martha or Lois?

From an article with Geoff Johns!

As far as the near future, Johns is excited about next week’s episode of The Flash. “Oh man, there’s a sequence in Episode 4 that I’m partial to because I love Captain Cold [Wentworth Miller] — there’s a sequence at the end that is so insane, that I’m like, “Are we actually going to be able to pull this off?” And they did. It feels like a movie.” He teased that Fish Mooney could make the jump from TV to comics the same way John Diggle did. He also confirmed that Supergirl will feature a fully-powered and flying Kara.

CBS Talks SUPERGIRL Casting, Costume & Crossing Over with ARROW & THE FLASH

CBS Talks SUPERGIRL Casting, Costume & Crossing Over with ARROW & THE FLASH

After CW found hits with comic-based programming like Arrow and The Flash, their big sister network CBS is looking to do the same with Supergirl. During this year's annual Television Critics Association winter press tour, CBS chairman Nina Tassler opened up about the recently announced television series, ranging from casting to costuming and even crossing over with the other live-action shows based on DC Comics.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Supergirl will be a crime procedural mixing a "case of the week" style formula with a "real series arc" for the titular character according to Tassler.

“[Supergirl is] a very strong, independent young woman," Tassler says. "She’s coming into her own. She’s dealing with family issues. She’s dealing with work issues. It’s a female empowerment story. If you look at the strong female characters we have on the air, it really is resonant of that … We’re big feminists. It’s her intellect, it’s her skill, it’s her smarts. It’s all of those elements. It’s not just her strength, which she does have.”

EW says that CBS has auditioning actresses to play the lead role for "several weeks," with CBS leaning towards a "lesser-known" actor to play the part -- namechecking a particularly fond memory for an analogy in the process..

"I think back to having had the good fortune of being at Warner Bros. when we were doing Lois & Clark, the chemistry between Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher was really wonderful," said Tassler, who worked as VP of Drama for CBS during that show's run. "So I think in this case, it’s looking for someone who embodies both the freshness and the exuberance of being a young woman in today’s challenging climate and being someone who can carry this kind of series on her shoulders. It’s a big, big show.”

CBS hasn't found its Supergirl yet, it has already found her costume. Tassler descibes the design as "awesome," and says its designed by Arrow and The Flash costumer Colleen Atwood.

But despite sharing the same tailor, Tassler say's don't expect Supergirl to cross paths with the CW super-duo.

"That's a different network so I think we're going to keep Supergirl to ourself right now," Tassler told NerdReport.

Although CBS and the CW are both under the Time Warner umbrella (as is DC Entertainment), it's not unheard of in television for networks to be territorial about their projects. That being said, Supergirl does share the same executive producer as The Flash and Arrow in Greg Berlanti.

But earlier in January The Hollywood Reporter asked fellow Arrow producer about such a crossover, with Guggenheim saying it was "possible." Lesley Goldberg, who conducted the THR interview, said that she "heard" Berlanti's deal with CBS included the stipulation that the three series could crossover, but no one involved with the various shows have confirmed that.

An earlier article I missed!
Kara Zor-El’s last name on the series will be… drum roll… Danvers! That’s the name of her foster family in the series pitch. She’ll be 24 years old on the show, and they’re casting 22 to 26 year-old caucasian women. The Danvers family “taught her to be careful with her extraordinary powers,” according to the casting notice, and after repressing them for half her life she is, according to TVLine, “forced to bust out her super moves in public during an unexpected disaster.” That causes her to decide to start superheroing on a regular basis. Modern fans probably recognize the "Danvers" name from the 90s Supergirl series, which starred a girl named Linda Danvers. The name actually goes back to 1961, however, when the original Kara was adopted by the Danvers family, and went by the name Linda Lee.

The second lead being cast is her adopted older sister, Alexandra “Alex” Danvers, who is 26 on the show. She’s described as “gorgeous, brilliant,” and “science-minded.” Alex studies all she can about Kara and her alien origins and in the show “works for a secret government organization.” Whether that will put her at odds with Kara or on her “team” similar to the teams that have built-up around Arrow and The Flash is yet to be determined, however.

Casting Continues for Supergirl

In addition to the two female leads announced last week (Kara Zor-El “Danvers” and her adoptive sister), more casting information for Supergirl, which already has a series order from CBS, hit on Monday. Media maven Cat Grant, photographer James Olsen, tech wiz Winslow Schott, and DEO bigwig Hank Henshaw are all now on the casting docket.

Of course, all four of those names mean a lot more to a Superman fan than your average viewer. Jimmy Olsen, most people on the street probably know a thing or two about. He’s a photographer, he’s Superman’s pal, and he’s usually a bit green behind the ears. According to TVLine’s casting notice, they’re casting late 20s to early 30s for Olsen, open ethnicity, and he is importantly listed as “James,” not Jimmy. He’s described as a “smart, worldly, and attractive photographer for CatCo. An Alpha male with salt-of-the-earth nature.”

So what’s CatCo? It’s a media conglomerate owned by Cat Grant, who in the comics has been anything from a gossip columnist to a high-level rival for Lois Lane. Here, she’s a 40-something (open ethnicity casting once more) head of CatCo, and she’ll be Kara’s direct boss in civilian life - Kara won’t be a reporter, though, she’ll be Cat’s personal assistant.

Winslow “Wynn” Schott, meanwhile, is the Superman villain known as Toyman in the comics. Here he’ll be a twenty something tech wiz who lives next door to Kara, and of course pines after her.

Hank Henshaw, finally, will be a 40-something DEO agent who is “worried that Supergirl’s otherworldly abilities pose a threat to humankind.” In the pages of DC Comics, Henshaw was an astronaut who went on to become the pre-52 Cyborg Superman, a villain who once posed as Superman himself after the latter’s supposed death. In the New 52, that villain’s role is filled with another being close to Kara - her father.

The fact that Greg Berlanti (Arrow) is spearheading it has me really excited.

Gemma Atkinson, along with Claire Holt were among those that auditioned for the lead but rumor has it Holt had to pull out due to time constraints with other projects.

Report: SUPERGIRL casts JIMMY OLSEN

Variety is reporting Wednesday evening that CBS has cast Mehcad Brooks (Necessary Roughness, True Blood) as James “Jimmy” Olsen in their in-development drama Supergirl. In addition to being the TV version of the classic DC Comics character/best pal to Superman, Olsen will reportedly be the love interest of Melissa Benoist’s Kara/Supergirl.

According to Variety, Jimmy is an “attractive photographer at CatCo, the media company where Kara Zor-El works, as an assistant to Cat Grant, (yet to be casted). Recently, Jimmy has been living and working in National City, though the reason is still a secret.”

Superman will appear in CBS' Supergirl in some form!

Supergirl Series is Casting a Superman Double

A new listing on Project Casting reveals an interesting detail about the upcoming “Supergirl” TV series – Superman will appear! The post asks for a “body double for a DC Comic Superhero” who should be “5’11 or taller, Square Jawed and have a ripped physique.” It also asks for those applying to list “Superman” in their e-mail subject.

Since the series was announced back in September, it has never been confirmed if the Man of Steel would appear, but now it seems Kara’s cousin will at the very least make a brief appearance, though it’s possible his face will never be shown.

Hailing from Warner Bros. TV and Berlanti Productions (who also produce the hit DC Comics series “Arrow” and “The Flash” for The CW), “Supergirl” is based on the characters from DC Comics and centers on Kara Zor-El, who comes to Earth after escaping the destruction of Krypton. After many years hiding her abilities, she joins the ranks of her cousin Superman to become the hero she was meant to be.

The pilot episode was written by Ali Adler (“No Ordinary Family”) and Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “The Flash”). They will also executive produce along with Sarah Schechter and Warner Bros. TV. The show has a series commitment at CBS. Melissa Benoist will star as the titular Supergirl along with Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, Laura Benanti as her Kryptonian mother Alura Zor-El, and Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant.

So Calista Flockhart as Cat that's interesting!

Interesting to note that Supergirl's connection to the surname Danvers(though she didn't go by Kara Danvers at the time) predates Marvel's Carol Danvers, aka the original Ms. Marvel, now the current Captain Marvel(and one of Marvel's future movie projects). Wonder if this is where Carol's creators drew their inspiration from? If you think about it, Kree names sound similar to Kryptonian names. Kal-El, Zor-El.......Mar-Vell. I never put a lot of thought into it when I was younger, but Marvel wasn't shy when it came to getting inspiration from DC. They turned DC's JLA into the Squadron Supreme and the Legion of Super-Heroes into the Shi'ar Imperial Guard, so it's possible the Kree were an early, not quite as blatant, steal of Kryptonians.

On first glance its not to bad. :good!:

I found a larger version and saved it to my computer and enhanced it to see better detail it appears to be the same material as the "Man of Steel" suit. Right around where the pleat in the skirt is there is some red piping or stitching that goes up the chest and then down under the arms. It also goes down the arms from the shoulders and wraps around the arms a couple of times.

The only part I don't like is the dark (red?) pantyhose. If they changed that to natural it wouldn't look bad. It just seems to make the lower half of the suit to dark. IMO Also maybe cut the boots below the knee?

I've only seen Melissa Benoist in Glee. She did fine but that's all I have to go off of. I wonder how she'll handle being Supergirl...

Mehcad Brooks is good. I saw him in both Necessary Roughness and Trueblood and I felt like he did great with both characters.

Berlanti has handled both Arrow and Flash very well so I'll definitely give this a shot and more than likely won't be disappointed.

‘Supergirl’ Picked Up To Series At CBS

‘Supergirl’ Picked Up To Series At CBS

Supergirl, the superhero drama co-created and executive produced by Greg Berlanti, is flying high at CBS with an early series order. As part of the deal for the project between CBS and Warner Bros. TV, the network had an early deadline to make a decision on the pilot, a perk reserved only for the biggest producers in town that CBS also has bestowed on Chuck Lorre. (CBS, which presents next Wednesday, usually doesn’t start making orders until Friday or Saturday of pre-upfront week.)

Written by Berlanti, Ali Adler and Andrew Kreisberg based on the characters from DC Comics, Supergirl, from WBTV and studio-based Berlanti Prods., centers on Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist). Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin, Superman. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. Co-starring as regulars are Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Chyler Leigh as Alexandra “Alex” Danvers, Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen and David Harewood as Hank Henshaw. Berlanti, Adler and Sarah Schechter executive produce.

CBS originally landed the Supergirl pitch in September with a big series commitment. I hear the size of the commitment got trimmed during the pilot pickup stage, something the producers sacrificed so the project could go to production on time with their choices for director, Glen Winter, and star, Benoist. The finished pilot had been getting good reviews, including solid feedback for Winter and Benoist’s work.

It is shaping up to be a big upfront for Berlanti, who already has three new series picked up for next season, Supergirl on CBS, the Arrow-Flash spinoff on the CW as well as NBC drama Blindspot, which he executive produces. They will joining returning series Arrow and Flash, with a renewal for Mysteries of Laura at NBC also a possibility.

The pickup of Supergirl puts the first piece in the CBS 2015-16 puzzle. On the drama side, Limitless had been looking strong and may start making offers to writers, along with medical drama Code Black. Factoring in the Criminal Minds spinoff and Rush Hour, which has been picking up momentum and is looking good at the moment, there are some tough decisions to be made at the network this week. On the comedy side, attention had focused on Life In Pieces, Angel From Hell and The Half of It, with Super Clyde and super late entry Dan O’Shannon as possibilities.

Well Supergirl will debut on CBS in November!

Now the bad new in there infinite wisdom they have sceduled it for Monday's it will now go head to head with Gotham on Fox.

Actual quotes!
As for the Supergirl-Gotham clash, CBS’ brass said that Supergirl is broader and more relatable, featuring romance, so it doesn’t compete for the same audience as Gotham. “I think it’s wrong to think that if there’s another genre show in that time slot, that we can’t succeed,” head of scheduling Kelly Kahl said!
