Fox Nabs Gotham City Origin Drama About Commissioner Gordon

Fox Nabs Gotham City Origin Drama About Commissioner Gordon From Bruno Heller & Warner Bros. TV With Series Commitment

EXCLUSIVE: In one of the biggest drama deals this season, after a bidding war, Fox has landed Gotham, from Warner Bros. TV and The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller, with a series commitment. For Gotham, Warner Bros TV is mining one of DC Comics‘ most popular character universes, Batman. It explores the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains that made Gotham famous. In Gotham, Gordon is still a detective with the Gotham City Police Department and is yet to meet Batman who will not be part of the series.

Well this is interesting really surprised that Fox went after a series like this! Since Batman isn't showing up not sure how well this will work!

Could be fantastic.
It will take the perfect casting of Gordon for it to be a success. I'm really surprised it was picked up for series without a "Pilot" being filmed for the network first that rarely ever happens.

There was a GCPD comic series that lasted a while and was very popular but it was set in the present day and Batman (as well as other characters) made regular appearances.

This has a lot of potential. I'm just surprised it's on Fox and not the WB.

Danny Cannon To Direct & Executive Produce Fox’s ‘Gotham’ Pilot
EXCLUSIVE: Danny Cannon has been tapped to direct and executive produce the pilot for Fox’s high-profile comic book drama Gotham, from Warner Bros. TV and The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller. The project, which landed at Fox in September after a bidding war, mines DC Comics’ popular Batman character universe and explores the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains who made Gotham City famous. It has a series commitment and is expected to go to series as the project is a priority for the network, and the pilot has a series penalty behind it.

In Gotham, Gordon is still a detective with the Gotham City Police Department and has yet to meet Batman, who will not be part of the series. Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Commissioner Gordon has appeared in comic books as well as Batman films and series, including in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, where he was played by Gary Oldman. CAA-repped Cannon directed the pilots and served as an executive producer on the CSI franchise. He also directed the pilot and exec produced the CW’s Nikita, serves as exec producer on the network’s freshman The Tomorrow People, whose pilot he also directed, along with the Lifetime pilot The Lottery. He also is attached to direct a 1930s Hollywood drama project set up at the CW with Ellen DeGeneres’ company producing through Warner Bros. TV.

TCA: Fox’s ‘Gotham’ Series Will Feature All Classic Batman Characters, Including Bruce Wayne

TCA: Fox’s ‘Gotham’ Series Will Feature All Classic Batman Characters, Including Bruce Wayne

In the original announcement, Fox‘s drama Gotham was described as the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains who made Gotham City famous. Fox chairman Kevin Reilly today announced that the series will include all of the classic Batman villains as well as heroes, including young Bruce Wayne. TCA “The show will track Bruce from a child (around 12 years old) until he puts on a cape (in the finale),” he said. Also on tap are the Riddler, Catwoman, the Penguin. “We will see how they get to become what they are as Gotham is teetering on the edge,” Reilly said. “It is an operatic soap with a larger than life quality.” Reilly also confirmed that Gotham, originally bought with a series commitment, has a greenlighted pilot (Danny Cannon is directing), and is setting up a writers room in mid-February with the full intention to go to series. The series hails from Warner Bros TV and The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller.

This show has my attention. Hope it turns out to be good instead of a cash grab to get viewers by feeding off all the Nolan Batman craze.

Sounds almost just like Smallville!

Yeah I'm really waiting for this. It is either going to be really amazing or really awful and we'll know in the first couple of episodes. I don't think there will be much middle-ground on this one.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Wonder if it will be set in the past or present day.

Also, if the goal is to follow Bruce from 12 years old to dawning the cowl then they are planning a pretty long series. At least 8 or nine seasons.

Donal Logue Offered Commissioner Gordon Role in GOTHAM?

According to Latino Review, Sons of Anarchy co-star Donal Logue has been offered the lead role of Commissoner James Gordon in Fox's Batman inspired series Gotham. Logue is a freakin' great choice! The guy is a solid actor, and he was awesome in Sons of Anarchy. He's got that gritty, hard feel that this character needs. If he ends up taking the role I would be very happy. The actor denied it on Twitter though, saying,

@nerdbastards not true! I wish-would be awesome (but who could top Gary Oldman?) From what I heard, Gotham catches Gordon in his late 20's

Of course he could just being denying it until it's official. You never know with these kings of things. Yesterday Fox chairman Kevin Reilly announced that not only would the series focus on Gordon, but also a young Batman and the villains that will infest Gotham.

"The show won't have a bunch of characters you've never heard of. We see Detective Gordon, before he's a commissioner, all the characters you know, Bruce Wayne, the Penguin, all of them. It's Gotham teetering on the edge, and we see what makes these characters become who they are, [like] Catwoman. It's an operatic soap that has a slightly larger-than-life quality to it."

I'm convinced that this series is going to be great! The more I hear about it, the more excited I get.

Apparently the negotiations with Donal Logue fell through with the announced news!

Fox Casts GOTHAM's JAMES GORDON ... and He Once Played BATMAN!

Fox Casts GOTHAM's JAMES GORDON and He Once Played BATMAN!

Ben McKenzie, the former star of TNT's cop drama Southland and Fox's teen drama The O.C. has been cast in the lead role of James Gordon in Fox's Gotham. Interestingly, the 35 year-old McKenzie also once voiced Bruce Wayne/Batman in 2011's DC animated adaptation of Frank Miller's Batman: Year One.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, McKenzie's Gordon is a "rookie detective for Gotham City Police Department's Homicide Squad. A college football star,?and a war hero, Gordon was fast-tracked through the GCPD?ranks. He's brave, energetic and honest. Driven to live up to the classical virtues of a father he barely knew, he's an idealistic soul, to the point of naiveté. That virtue is tempered by analytical intelligence and an ambitious alpha male ego -- he'll back up his naive ideals with action."

McKenzie will share the screen with a still-to-be cast teen or pre-teen Bruce Wayne, and Gotham will be as much of an origin story for Batman as for Gordon, Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly reportedly confirmed last month at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour. "It's Gotham teetering on the edge," Reilly reportedly said. "This is all of the classic Batman characters."

Characters like Alfred, the Joker, the Riddler, Penguin and Catwoman are all expected to eventually find their way into the series.

"This is not one of the things where you bought a franchise and then none of characters people know," Reilly revealed according to THR. "We will follow Bruce Wayne right up until the point where he gets interesting."

Meaning the series is designed to ultimately end when Bruce becomes Batman, as Smallville ended when Clark Kent finally became a full-fledged Superman.

Reilly also reportedly revealed that the series will be very serialized and not an "adjunct companion" show. "This is the Batman franchise just backing it up," he reportedly said. "It gives a real focus as to what this show is about and what stories we're telling."

The Warner Bros. Television project, which already has a series commitment from Fox, is being written and executive produced by The Mentalist showrunner Bruno Heller with CSI's Danny Cannon directing and executive producing the pilot.

‘Gotham’ Casts Four Roles Including The Penguin & Alfred
‘Gotham’ Casts Four Roles Including The Penguin & Alfred

Robin Lord Taylor, Zabryna Guevara (Burn Notice), Sean Pertwee (The Tudors, Camelot) and Erin Richards (Breaking In) have been cast opposite Ben McKenzie (Southland) in Fox‘s Batman prequel drama series Gotham.

Based on DC characters from the Batman universe, Gotham explores the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon (McKenzie) as an idealistic rookie detective in Gotham City; Bruce Wayne following the death of his parents; and the villains that made Gotham City famous.

Taylor will play one of those villains, Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin. With the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal, Cobblepot is a low-level psychopath for gangster Fish Mooney who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor. Guevara, will play Captain Essen, Gordon’s boss at the GCPD Homicide Squad, who balances the worlds of police and politics with a Machiavellian skill that’s as much corporate litigator as cop. Pertwee, will play a younger version of Bruce Wayne’s trusted valet Alfred Pennyworth. A tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London, Alfred has loyally served the Waynes and now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he’s fiercely protective of the young Bruce. In the casting notices for Gotham, the ideal choice for the role was described as a young Michael Caine, the actor who played Alfred in the Batman movie trilogy. Richards, will play Barbara Kean, a sophisticated emergency room doctor and Gordon’s fiancée who stands by her future husband…which can be difficult in a world as corrupt as Gotham.

Gotham is written/exec produced by The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller, with Danny Cannon directing/exec producing for Warner Bros TV.

Donal Logue Set For Fox’s Batman Drama ‘Gotham’
Donal Logue Set For Fox’s Batman Drama ‘Gotham’

After weeks of speculation, the worst-kept Gotham casting secret is finally out, with Donal Logue closing a deal to co-star opposite Ben McKenzie in Fox‘s Batman prequel drama, which has a series commitment. Based on DC characters from the Batman universe, Gotham explores the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon (McKenzie) as an idealistic rookie detective in Gotham City, Bruce Wayne, and the villains that made Gotham City famous. Logue plays Detective Harvey Bullock, Gordon’s rough-around-the-edges partner and mentor who plays loose with police procedure, but he gets results … and he does it with old-school, forceful panache. Once a sitcom star, Logue reinvented himself as a drama actor with dark turns on BBC America’s Copper and FX’s Sons Of Anarchy. He is with UTA, Kipperman Management and attorney Shep Rosenman.

It actually seems to be a very solid cast they have put together! The only thing missing is the teenager they get to play Bruce Wayne.

Jada Pinkett Smith joins GOTHAM

Jada Pinkett Smith joins GOTHAM

Fox has cast Jada Pinkett Smith in their Batman prequel series Gotham. She will play Fish Mooney, "a sadistic gangster with street smarts and a short temper." She will basically be Penguin's boss. Smith is a solid actress, and she'll make a great addition to the series.

The show will focus on a younger version of James Gordon, who is being played by Ben McKenzie. Other cast members include Donal Logue as Detective Harvey Bullock, Zabryna Guevara as Captain Essen, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, and Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot a.k.a the Penguin.

The hour long series was written by The Mentalist’s Bruno Heller, and the first episode will be directed by Danny Cannon (CSI).

Bruce Wayne & Selina Kyle has been cast! Not sure why they are saying the kid chosen is 12 when according to his Wiki page he just turned 14?

Checkout the picture from IMDB of Camren Bicondova its freaky how much she looks like a young Michelle Pfeiffer from Batman Returns!

Fox's GOTHAM Casts 12 Year-Old BRUCE WAYNE, SELINA KYLE

The young Bruce Wayne in Gotham has been cast, and it’s Touch star David Mazouz. At 12 years old, he’s right on target for the casting call, as the young Bruce who has only recently lost his parents tries to find his way (and his mission) while Gotham City grows around young police detective James Gordon.

The role puts a lot of pressure on Mazouz - and on the casting director - to provide someone who will grow naturally into a tall, physical action hero type. At the TCA event in January 2014, Fox Chariman Kevin Reilly said that the show will follow Bruce Wayne's journey all the way up until that fateful day that he becomes Batman. "The show will track Bruce from a child (around 12 years old) until he puts on a cape (in the series finale)," Reilly said. In the press release announcing the casting, however, Warner Bros TV was quick to note that the series' main star is James Gordon, who, along with the butler Alfred Pennyworth, will be who Bruce Wayne "relies on for guidance and protection," at least at first.

Mazouz fits the last major piece of the Gotham puzzle, but one more also joins him in new casting Tuesday, as Camren Bicondova, an actress and dancer, joins as Selina Kyle (who will eventually become Catwoman, in the Batman mythos). Described as a “teenage orphan and a skilled street thief who is dangerous when cornered,” she says on her website she’s a “cat lover,” so the young dancer has that step in the right direction for the role. In fact, she frequently tweets and posts pictures and videos with the hashtag “#JustBEaCAT” - elaborate audition ploy, or genuine love for felines?

Gotham received a straight-to-series order from Fox, and will premiere in the 2014-2015 season for the channel. It also stars Ben McKenzie as Gordon, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, Donal Logue as Detective Harvey Bullock, Robin Taylor as Oswald “The Penguin” Cobblepot, Zabryna Guevara as Captain Essen, and Jada Pinkett Smith as mob boss Fish Mooney. Bruno Heller wrote the pilot and will act as Executive Producer/showrunner, alongside director and EP Danny Cannon.

'Gotham': FOX's pre-Batman drama gets a logo and synopsis

'Gotham': FOX's pre-Batman drama gets a logo and synopsis

FOX is moving quickly with all of this "Gotham" news. All of the regular cast has been announced and now there's a logo for the series and a synopsis, shedding a bit more light on the character details. There's even a promise of Two-Face and The Joker to come, which should be interesting. As for the logo, it has the same feel as "Batman: The Animated Series," which is a great thing in the Batman canon to be compared to.

With young versions of James Gordon (Ben McKenzie), The Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor), Catwoman (Camren Bicondova) and Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) coming to life, the series has the possibility of being something incredible if done right.

Here's what FOX has to say about the show in a press release, care of JoBlo:

"Everyone knows the name Commissioner Gordon. He is one of the crime world's greatest foes, a man whose reputation is synonymous with law and order. But what is known of Gordon's story and his rise from rookie detective to Police Commissioner? What did it take to navigate the multiple layers of corruption that secretly ruled Gotham City, the spawning ground of the world's most iconic villains? And what circumstances created them - the larger-than-life personas who would become Catwoman, The Penguin, The Riddler, Two-Face and The Joker?

'GOTHAM' is an origin story of the great DC Comics super villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer/writer Bruno Heller ('The Mentalist,' 'Rome'), 'GOTHAM' follows one cop's rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time.

Growing up in Gotham City's surrounding suburbs, JAMES GORDON (Ben McKenzie, 'Southland,' 'The O.C.') romanticized the city as a glamorous and exciting metropolis where his late father once served as a successful district attorney. Now, two weeks into his new job as a Gotham City detective and engaged to his beloved fiancée, BARBARA KEAN (Erin Richards, 'Open Grave,' 'Breaking In'), Gordon is living his dream - even as he hopes to restore the city back to the pure version he remembers it was as a kid.

Brave, honest and ready to prove himself, the newly-minted detective is partnered with the brash, but shrewd police legend HARVEY BULLOCK (Donal Logue, 'Sons of Anarchy,' 'Terriers,' 'Vikings,' 'Copper'), as the two stumble upon the city's highest-profile case ever: the murder of local billionaires Thomas and Martha Wayne. At the scene of the crime, Gordon meets the sole survivor: the Waynes' hauntingly intense 12-year-old son, BRUCE (David Mazouz, 'Touch'), toward whom the young detective feels an inexplicable kinship. Moved by the boy's profound loss, Gordon vows to catch the killer.

As he navigates the often-underhanded politics of Gotham's criminal justice system, Gordon will confront imposing gang boss FISH MOONEY (Jada Pinkett Smith, 'The Matrix' films, 'HawthoRNe,' 'Collateral'), and many of the characters who will become some of fiction's most renowned, enduring villains, including a teenaged SELINA KYLE/the future CATWOMAN (acting newcomer Camren Bicondova) and OSWALD COBBLEPOT/THE PENGUIN (Robin Lord Taylor, 'The Walking Dead,' 'Another Earth').

Although the crime drama will follow Gordon's turbulent and singular rise through the Gotham City police department, led by Police Captain SARAH ESSEN (Zabryna Guevara, 'Burn Notice'), it also will focus on the unlikely friendship Gordon forms with the young heir to the Wayne fortune, who is being raised by his unflappable butler, ALFRED (Sean Pertwee, 'Camelot,' 'Elementary'). It is a friendship that will last them all of their lives, playing a crucial role in helping the young boy eventually become the crusader he's destined to be.

'GOTHAM' is based upon characters published by DC Comics and is produced by Warner Bros. Television. Executive producer Bruno Heller ('The Mentalist') wrote the pilot, which will be directed and executive-produced by Emmy Award nominee Danny Cannon (the 'CSI' series, 'Nikita')."
