SONOMA, Calif. -- Nextel Cup points leader Jeff Gordon and defending series champion Jimmie Johnson, both of the Hendrick Motorsports stable, have failed inspection at Infineon Raceway.

The cars of neither Gordon, the defending race champion, nor Johnson will be allowed to practice or qualify Friday.

John Roberts just spouted off about Jimmie Johnson being one of the best road course drivers out there in the same breath as Jeff Gordon.

How can you fail prerace inspection and not be given the chance to fix whats wrong? Even Waltrip got to put a new engine in his car at Daytona after the accellerant deal...

They're allowing them to fix it, and the #48 just passed inspection the second time around apparently. They'll be allowed on the track tomorrow, assuming they pass inspection this second time.

Has Jimmie Johnson ever won a road course race??? I don't think so, John Roberts, NEVER mention him in the same sentence in Jeff Gordon while speaking of road course racing.

I believe he was referring to the crew chiefs, who could be suspended for this.

They should get the same thing that every other crew chief has gotten that's messed with anything that they shouldn't have....JMO....And no I'm not just saying this because it was 2 Hendrick drivers and what not, I'd say that for anyone

NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said both cars "failed the initial inspection ... as a result of body modifications found to be outside NASCAR tolerances. The front fender [of both cars] was modified outside of NASCAR regulations. They did not meet the C2 template inspection."

"When we presented the cars for inspection today [NASCAR] found our fenders were outside their limits in between the templates," said Doug Duchardt, Hendrick Motorsports' vice president of development. "The cars fit the templates. We thought we could work on the points between the templates and it became clear to us [in inspection] that we could not."

yeah, let's hang 'em by their toenails. NASCAR needs to get a grip. to me, this seems minor and is no reason for all the "get a rope" blather.

Even though I think Nascar has been way too harsh on their fines and penalties, they should get the same penalty, fine, and points deduction that Dale Jr. and his crew chief got.
