Chatter seems to be that we need to start reading up on them. My understanding being that NASCAR is shrinking fields to 40, with 36 charter teams. Also, purses will be more even top to bottom. Lots of other stipulations. Too much to summarize here so read this and dig around:

Report: NASCAR contemplating ‘charter’ system with 40-car field |

I'll add that the I think 19 and 41 will "buy" the MWR charters. I feel confident the 21 will get one too.

Interesting stuff, to say the least.

It's coming eventually. I'm strictly guessing here, but I bet in the next two weeks it will be in place.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We need to take greater interest in how NASCAR works as a sanctioning body.

I don't really see an issue with it.

40 cars is plenty. The good teams are practically guaranteed to make it anyway.

I am ok with the 40 cars. Just not sure how I feel about some of the other stuff involved.

Sounds to me another version of the top 35 rule we had a few years ago.

List of the new Charter teams. The biggest teams not having charters are #19, #21, and #41. Though it is apparently all but official that MWR's two charters will be sold to SHR and JGR.

I count 35. Am I off?

Edit: Yep. Miscounted.

I think Blaney is good enough with a Penske supported Wood Brothers team that he shouldn't have too much of an issue, outside of Daytona, where the qualifying format is different.

Also, some have speculated that this means a driver's union is also forthcoming.
