Switch pitcher vs. switch hitter

This is worth a look if you haven't seen it:

Bugs & Cranks Video(s): Switch Pitcher vs Switch Hitter

And an ESPN story with more details. I hope they do a follow up with an official clarification of the rules.

I know it was the guy's first start, but I can't believe that the umpires didn't figure this out in advance. Maybe Staten Island didn't bother to tell them that they had a switch pitcher on the roster.

I've heard of a couple of guys trying to switch pitch. Can you imagine how tough that would be on a hitter if the pitcher was even marginally effective from both sides?

If this guy can just make it to the majors, he'll have a job forever. In this era of specialized relief, it almost would be like having an extra roster spot. Not only can you bring him in in situational relief spots against anybody, but he can probably pitch more often than most relievers, too. Used him two days in a row from the right side? Fine, bring him in and let him work his left arm tonight. If he turns out to be even sort of good, he's a big advantage.
