Took the game over is a bit strong. The pitching was still dominated by whitey, but hitting and D gave way.

I'll definitely give that olden days ball of all types is marred by lack of America's best athletes.

That's part of the quota issue, no different than the "Last 3 Guys On The End Of The Bench In the '70s and '80s NBA." To get a shot as a pitcher, blacks and latinos had to be Newcomb, Gibson, Marichal, or Tiant. How many mediocre black or latin pitchers did you see then? It's not because they didn't exist. Look at the Negro League stats for the excellent players who made the jump. Their MLB numbers were pretty much in line with their performance in the segregated game. That tells me the pitching was comparable.
