Anyone have any recent, lesser-known suggestions? I'm kind of going through a dry spell and would love to find a couple of CDs worth listening to this weekend.

I'm looking forward to Jack Johnson's new album this week. I think that 10 Years (local boys) are coming out with something new soon, too. Currently, love the Once soundtrack.

Not sure what you like.

Here are some lesser known bands with some amazing stuff - it's not straight forward rock by any means though.

Giant Sand - the album Chore of Enchantment is a masterpiece.

Calexico - rhythm section in some Giant Sand. Try The Black Light - they have a southwestern sound.

Lambchop - talented group of Nashville musicians that play some beautiful and interesting music - singer is quirky but awesome and lyrics are likewise. Try Is a Woman or How I Quit Smoking - every album is very different.

Acetone - the album of the same name is very cool. Hard to describe but outstanding guitar work.

Band of Bees - an Isle of Wight band that is out of the Manchester mold with a bit more jazzy sound than traditional Manchester sounds.

Alejandro Escovedez - try the live "More Miles than Money".

R.L. Burnside - Wish I was in Heaven Sitting Down. An ancient blues singer that gets modernized by some great backing music including some trip-hop stuff.

American Analog Set - Know By Heart. Semi-upbeat slowcore. Great background music.

The Hold Steady - Almost Killed Me. An entertaining cross between early Bruce Springfield (think Blinded by the Light) and AC/DC. Crazy lyrics delivered gravelly and rapid fire over a straight ahead rock beat. Good stuff.

Part 2

Frank Black (of Pixies fame) - Honey Comb or Frank Black and the Catholics. The first one is more mellow the second more rock. Both good.

Paul Weller - Wildwood (a classic)

Paul Westerberg - his new stuff is really good - (some is under the name Grandpaboy. Rough edged honky tonk. Check out Come Feel Me Tremble.

J.J. Cale - J.J. Cale Live - if you don't have it get it.

Jack Logan and Bob Kimbell - Woodshedding. The prolific Jack Logan (of Athens GA) has a great album here.

Real: The Tom T. Hall Project - a tribute album to Tom T. Hall --- good stuff with Knoxville's own R.B. Morris as a contributor.

Nick Lowe - his last 4 albums or so have been great - The Impossible Bird (country), Dig My Mood (more loungey), Convincer (a mix) and At My Age. One of the best songwriters alive.

Olu Dara - In the World from Natchez to New York. A session player puts out his own mix of blues/jazz/soul - great stuff.

Ry Cooder - Paradise and Lunch. An oldy but goody.

KD, try the Whigs first album...can't remember the name right off the top of my head. Kings Leon rock as well, the newest album is my least fav though. And for some good ole ass kickin metal....Lamb of God will always do in a pinch.

Car commercial of some kind. That entire album is the best one they have.

Vampire Weekend, just picked up their debut. So far so good.

For anyone that downloads music vs. buying albums. Amazon's new MP3 service is great. Higher bitrates than iTunes, and no DRM. Cheaper too!
