Gonzales said to have resigned - Yahoo! News

CRAWFORD, Texas - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has resigned, ending a months-long standoff with Republican and Democratic critics who called for his ouster over the Justice Department's botched handling of FBI terror investigations and the firing of U.S. attorneys, officials said Monday.

Attorney General Gonzales resigns, officials say - CNN.com

President Bush will likely nominate Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff to the position, senior administration officials said. Clay Johnson, deputy director for management at the Office of Management and Budget, would replace Chertoff, the officials said.

Not really that sad to see him go.

I think the confirmation hearing will be interesting to watch. The left will get their day but what to do with it?

I think that this resignation, if true, is a little different from Rove's. This is clearly driven by the pressure from Congress, and at this point - likely within his own party. He made some huge mistakes, but perhaps his biggest was not knowing when to say no to his BFF George. I've heard of Clay Johnson a fair amount, but I can't figure out how.......I'll have to look into that.

Out the door and the speculation begins as to replacements. Recess appointment anyone?

Yes. It's the aniversary of Katrina and Obama and Edwards are rehashing that whole debacle again. Chertoff would be eaten alive. Ted Olson is a decent possibility. Whoever takes it will be a sucker since they'll be expected to hand over info and answer for the previous mess.

a recess appointment makes the most sense at this point, especially if W really wants someone in the AG's chair. The Dems can scream about it all they want, but they'll only have to deal with it until the next Congress is convened in Jan. 2009.

If you're trying to move on and get something accomplished with what little is left, do you really want to add another slap by making a recess appointment? The whole move is to get rid of controversy. A recess appointment does the exact opposite of the intended effect.

The Pelosi/Reid led Congress has been antagonistic with the WH since they day they took over the majority. What is a little more fuel to the fire going to harm? W could nominate the lead attorney for Code Pink and because W nominated them, the Dems in Congress would attack.

I thought there was an agreement between Reid and the WH for no recess appointments while they were on this break. Think there is a confirmation deal in the works?

Who cares. Clinton got rid of every single US attorney during his administration and no one questioned him. Amazing what the Dems focus on instead of running the country like they said they would. Guess that's why they have the lowest approval rating since Gallopp began taking polls in 1974.

We've been all over this before. Clinton's housecleaning and Bush's are two different things.

And it's amazing on the Dems accomplishments since the GOP Congress did so much as well. What's more exciting is the GOP's ratings in Congress are even lower than the Dems. You even have idiots like Lynn Westmoreland studying up on every rule so he can stall every vote even further. I guess the "Do Nothing Congress" from last year is contagious.

Not to be totally ignorant, but how is housekeeping different. You can put a black coat on a white cat, and the cat is still white. You can re-dress the means to tailor to your agenda, but the end result is identical and for identical reasons.

Coming into office, ALL Presidents bring in their own people to fill these positions - from cabinet positions to other upper level department positions. It's a given to happen across the board as soon as someone comes into office.

Bush pulled people right in the middle of investigations and court cases thus killing the respective offices' efforts to prosecute. The reason given for many is members of Congress not liking what certain ones were investigating. Some were removed from major cases to investigate much lower crimes focusing more on the desires of elected members of Congress.

No matter how you describe your cat's color the examples are completely different. The situations are different, circumstances are different, and stalling major federal cases for complete political reasons for lesser crimes just because a member of Congress whines is not exactly the same as an expected movement at the beginning of a new administration.
