It's nice to be ahead in the polls but if this lead holds up, Heath better get ready for a very dirty fight. His opponent is pretty sleazy, knows how to play rough, and won't hesitate if he gets in trouble. If I were Heath I'd want to be slightly behind and close in at the last minute.

This thread (if it turns into one) will probably get moved to the PUB.

I am sure Heath is dumb enough not to notice if his opponent starts playing dirty. Never thought he was the brightest guy.

One would hope that if he does win, his stay in Washington is more productive than his last.

I'm going ahead and moving it to the Pub.

Heath looks pretty conservative socially, but seems to be more liberal fiscally on issues like Social Security and Medicare.

A social conservative who spends money - isn't that what people are mad at W about?

That would make him the anti-libertarian. I hope he loses.

Heard he was holding out on congress waiting for his signing bonus to come through. He'll try to make it in Washington one way or the other. If at first you don't succeed....

That's a southern Democrat...or pretty much what most of the Republicans in the south are anyways. Most of these Congressmen are just southern Democrats who changed the letter to an R to either remain in office or get in office. Some just have the convictions to be honest and call themselves what they are.

I know for a fact this is a heavily profiled district with some major consulting firms. On the Dem side, this is one of about 35 nationwide districts that are considered high priority. He's got a lot of brains working this campaign behind the scenes. All he has to do is look pretty for the cameras and stick to the talking points....in other words DON'T follow the Cynthia McKinney Guide For Elected Office...

Isn't it amazing all the Democrats that suddenly realized they were Republicans right after the '94 election?

Well our Governor in 98 had a choice....either turn or get voted out. He turned. He still achieved what he wanted to achieve which is become governor. Look at all of those that switched in the Legislature here. Half of the GOP here are Dems who just HAD to stay in office. Too many survivalists like that in the GOP now and THAT is why you see conservatism pretty much dead and the government growing faster than my 4 year old.

I'm socially liberal and economically moderate. He doesn't seem like my kind of candidate, but good luck anyway.

I'm really trying to figure out where the Democrat comes out in Heath. He claims to be a pro-life, NRA member Democrat. His views on the environment represent most outdoor-lovers from this part of the country.

Maybe it's the no more oil drilling and claiming that privatized SS only benefits the rich. Or it could be the veiled reference to socialized medicine. However I doubt he wrote any of that on there.

I have always liked Heath as a person but just can't throw the support behind him.

It looks like he represents basically what southern Democrats used to be before they all flocked to the GOP and took up a little more conservative views to stay in office. I can't find it in my heart to believe there was some mass conversion of elected Democrats in the south just based on principles....knowing many will do what it takes and say what it takes just to stay in office.

Call me a pessimist. But I think honestly it is what is wrong with the GOP now. We've got too many old line Dems bringing their big government permissiveness.
