Quick fact. Va Tech backup QB Ryan Willis has more road wins over ranked opponents in 2018 than every Michigan team from 2007 to 2018 .... combined.

How about these jewels about our Vols:

- 7-43 against top 25 teams since 2008.
- 2-30 (.062) an an away underdog since 2008, worst in the SEC. The next worst teams in that stat, Kentucky and Miss St, have won 22.2% of their games as an away underdog.
- 26-56 (.317) in conference games since 2008. Only Kentucky and Vandy are worse, and only by a couple percentage points.
- Have not beaten an SEC West team since 2010 (Ole Miss).
- Have not beaten a ranked team since 2016 (Florida/Georgia/Nebraska).
- Have not beaten a top 15 team since 2015 (Northwestern).
- Have not beaten a top 10 team since 2006 (Georgia).
- Have not beaten a top 5 team since 2005 (LSU).
- Has not finished a season ranked in the top 5 or top 10 since 2001.
- Have not beaten a ranked Alabama team since 1999.

At least on the away games and conference games you have to consider Alabama in that picture. doesn't help much, but its a challenge we face every year.

True, but embedded in that conference record is also that long losing streak to Florida, which has no excuse. In the latter part of that streak the teams were evenly matched or we were actually better than them.

Here's another...during this 11-year losing streak to Alabama, we have been outscored 396-126, losing the games by an average score of 36-11 (25 pts). 6 of the defeats have been by 30 points or more.

Ok, I'll quit now.

All true, I suppose, but that does come with the asterisk that South Carolina finished the 2013 season ranked #4... I have always felt that where a team finishes the season should be more important than where they were ranked at the time the game was played (South Carolina was #11), as teams can be both underrated and overrated during the course of the season, especially early on. Not that Tennessee hasn't been absolutely dreadful since 2005, but posters on VN love to cite that statistic I put in bold without ever mentioning the 2013 South Carolina win and that does make it seem just a tad bit worse than it really is.

True, but I think what really can energize a fanbase is getting a win over a highly ranked team at the time they are ranked, not necessarily where they end up.

What is so frustrating about our perpetual rebuilds is that you see teams all the time who seem able to pull off some notable, milestone win in a game where they were an underdog yet we can't.

For example, Florida just beat a top 5 team at home last Saturday in year 1 of a rebuild. We haven't beaten a top 5 team at home since 2004 (Georgia). We also are 6-49 (.109) as an underdog since 2008, which is by far the worst in the SEC. The next worst team, Kentucky, is 17-66 (.205). Most of the other SEC teams are clustered between 25-35%.

We are an incredibly bad road underdog, even when it's only by a few points against unranked opponents. Those holding out hope for Saturday are kidding themselves.

No kidding - when was the last time that happened? Perhaps 2014 South Carolina? I don't have historical game-by-game point spreads in front of me though. South Carolina wasn't good that year, but we were worse heading into that week, and the game was in Columbia.

If not that game, then it might be as far back as 2006 Georgia. A very large percentage of our road victories over the last decade are just against Vandy and Kentucky, and we were probably slight favorites in each of those games.

EDIT: According to site I pulled the other stats from, we do have 2 road victories as an underdog since 2008, so it wouldn't be 2006 Georgia. It's gotta be 2014 South Carolina and one other since 2008.

We’re overdue. Can’t last forever. That’s my hope.

I told myself I’m not watching anymore Tenn games this year unless I have nothing else to do, just planned on recording them in case I wanted to watch. I think we have a puncher’s chance here though.

Will probably watch the first half of this game. If it gets bad I’m doing something else. Not even recording the Bama game, much less watching it.
