I just wanted all of the scrubs on here to know that I will soon be on live kicking all you nancies up and down the internet superhighway. Football, Gran turismo, tiger woods golf....whatever I can find. you have been warned.

I have a extra 360 with the RROD. How the heck did you fix it? I bought this fixer kit from ebay, and only screwed it up. The guy didn't send me enought parts/etc.

Go to Home Depot, buy about $12 worth of washers/screws, and then fix it yourself. You'll need a little thermal paste as well.

Whole process only takes about an hour, maybe a bit longer first time through.

Below are the parts you need from Home Depot.

the nylon washers seem to be key....I bought #5 metals I think and 2 of them were too tall, and one was 2 short...I'm going out to get the nylons later today so I can dial in the pressure. Interesting thing about this 360 is that it had been repaired and did not have the xclamps on it. It had screws and springs.....

I have another RROD right here that's no longer under warranty that I may try to fix. I didn't realize that's all it took to fix?

I have the parts, I just got frustrated. I got everything dimantled (Xclamps, etc) just couldn't get things to work right when trying to put it back together. I became frustrated with the aluminum coolers that go above the motherboard. I think they are coolers anyway. I ended up throwing the whole thing in a box and have not touched it in months. I guess I need to get on that. Can you buy the thermal paste at homedepot? If so, where abouts is that stuff in the store>?

Not sure if HD sells thermal paste or not. Probably a lot better off ordering some online. Best Buy, if they have it, is probably more.

Look for Arctic Silver or some thermal paste like that. A tiny bottle is plenty. You really only use a tiny dab of the stuff on each chip.

The hardest part is screwing the heatsinks back on. My adivce for this, make sure you have some tape around. Put all the screws/washers on and then tape them underneath. I then laid under my table and slowly pulled the board off the edge and tightened each screw and taking off the tape one at a time.

I couldn't think of the name for it in my above post, but heatsinks is what I was referring too. I got so frustrated with this step I could have murdered someone. Thanks for the advice. I will have to track down some thermal paste, but I think I can do this.

One more question. When I was in the process of fixing it before I put new thermal paste on the chips. Would that paste still be good or does it need to be fresh?

I'm not an expert, but I would re-do the paste. You can use a tiny bit of alcohol on a cloth to help remove the paste.

Tiny dab of paste on the chips. I used a credit card and spread the paste around best I could. Then, you want to screw on your heatsinks. Obviously not too tight or you'll break the motherboard. Paste isn't going to hurt anything, but try and place the heatsink straight down not let it move around much when tightening.

At this point, I like to plug it in without the fans running and let it heat up. If you get 2 red lights, wait 2 minutes and then pull the power. If you don't get 2 red lights (just a green light) after 3-7 minutes touch the heatsinks and make sure they are hot. Then unplug. With the paste now heated, give each screw on the heatsink one final torque to make sure the bond is solid. Just a tiny turn to secure it down.
