Report: Xbox 360s with Blu-ray coming in the third quarter - The Tech Report

Quote:
Just over a month ago, Asian tech sites reported that Lite-On was quietly manufacturing Blu-ray drives for Microsoft's Xbox 360 console. Microsoft took the time to shoot down that particular rumor, but now DigiTimes quotes a Chinese-language paper as saying the software giant has picked a company to produce Xbox 360 consoles with Blu-ray.
Interesting...wonder what these babies will cost?

they shouldn't cost any more or less than current systems.

it wasn't microsoft's intention, but the failure of HD-DVD is something of a blessing in disguise. Now with the prices of blu-ray drives falling (tiger direct has a 4x BR drive for the PC for about $130), Microsoft can integrate them into the 360 for a fraction of Sony's initial cost.

If its an external drive then I will definitely be picking that up. I will probably be selling my PS3 too because it will be useless.

I'm not a ps3 homer, but I do remember a few xbox fanboys(on a different game forum, not this one) laughing at the ps3 because they went with blue-ray back before it was even released.

There were two schools of thought here... since Sony was the major manufacturer of BRD, it made sense for them to market the PS3 with a built-in BR player, each technology could help the other.

Microsoft on the other hand, didn't want to be screwed if HD-DVD didn't make it (Sony was going to be screwed anyway if BR didn't make it) so they made the smart decision to make it an add-on and not get screwed if the tech failed.

I think both companies made the right decision for their businesses.

I'm not a PS3 homer by any means I've had both machines and see no major fault with either one. PS got lucky with blu-ray winning that battle. I do think the PS hasn't shown everything it can do yet though.

I'm just wondering wether Blu-Ray disc are going to be able to make better games. I've read where they have much more space than a standard DVD but is it going to translate into better games?

I would say no. Many current games don't use the full space of a DVD, let alone a DL-DVD.

maybe not "better" games, but certainly better looking games.

hmmmm

Games for the 360 wont be on BluRay. If they are, they will be available on DVD as well.

360 is about half way through it's lifecycle. At this point, I suppose if it's cheap for MS to include a BR drive, so be it. Might help them in the marketplace.

For current owners, it seems a bit of non-news, unless you are out of inputs and don't want to buy an HDMI switcher.

End of this year, BR drives will be under $200 for cheap models. (already seeing them around) I think someone would be crazy to drop $150 on an add-on that requires an xbox beside it over $180 for a stand-alone player. Again, perhaps you don't have inputs left. I'm sure there's other decent reasons why, but can't think of any off the top of my head.

BR might have beaten 'HD-DVD" but there's a long road ahead for BR technology. Everyone has an opinion, but I don't think BR will ever take over DVD like DVD did with VHS. Too many other ways to deliver content nowdays. Plus, most people have repeatedly shown over the years that top quality isn't the priority of most people. Their top priority is saving money. MP3 explosion over the last 10 years has clearly shown this this.
