In past games, the game would choose one of the client machines to host the game. At least I think so. Battlefield did it this way, anyway.
A dedicated server is a machine somewhere else that is simply running the server side of things. It produces much faster and more reliable gameplay. Since it's not running a game client on its machine, it doesn't have to render all the environments and everything. It simply handles the communication between players. | |

| The link only describes this for PC gamers. This means there's a separate client for dedicated servers. If you want to host a server, then you would need 2 machines instead of 1. One machine hosts the server, then you play from the other machine.
There are dedicated servers for consoles on a lot of games, too. They do not have to be purchased, per se. A lot of companies host dedicated, ranked servers. And even though players can't host their own, or be admins, the reliability is the key feature. | |
