The "Twitch"

It's a recruiting term used in evaluation to identify a player that has an above-average development of the fast twitch muscles in his body. Signs of this development is an above-average initial burst of movement. Fast twitch has nothing to do with strength. It has to do with explosiveness. The long jump is the best indicator of whether a player is or isn't "fast twitch" as it requires the most amount of movement from a stopped position. It's a term that Coach Orgeron uses to describe a defensive lineman that has a burst off the line. It's a trait that he prefers in his defensive linemen.

This has little to do with the future development of the fast twitch muscles in the body. It refers to the natural characteristics of the athlete. You are fast twitch or you are not.

example, from ESPN:
Quote:
Not real fast-twitched but quick enough to beat blockers to the hole and has adequate-to-good lateral agility and mobility sifting through the wash.

Another example:
Quote:
(Later, after the staff had left the war room, Orgeron explained that he really wanted to hear his coaches' observations. He was still trying to get a read on their evaluation skills. He said there was no one right answer or way to evaluate, but he felt pretty confident in his own eye, and he was just as interested to get a read on theirs.)

"He's fast-twitch," added offensive coordinator Dan Werner. Fast-twitch refers to the muscle fibers connected with explosive movements. Long-distance runners are said to be more wired with slow-twitch fibers, while sprinters are charged with fast-twitch.

Orgeron: "Okay, we gotta get him in the boat early because everybody is gonna come after him."

I was trying to engage in the twitch discussion, but my post was deleted. Wonder why?

I just don't understand twitch. Is Chris Johnson fast because he twitches?

Yeah, you should definitely look that up then.

It may be one of those chicken/egg debates.

I don't think Johnson's fast because he twitches. I think he twitches because he's fast.

But, in keeping with the discussion of Luc...

I can acknowledge that he may not be "fast" twitch. My question is, does that make him "slow" twitch? Or, again, are there degrees of twitch? If so, I'd classify Luc as "not fast, but still pretty fast" twitch. I mean, I'm pretty sure he twitches faster than most.

I plan to do just that.

But, in the meantime, since you brought it up, I'm trying to stay on topic, and continue the twitch discussion, specifically as it pertains to Luc.

yes there are varying degrees but most just stick with slow/fast. I know I don't want to be the one to tell Coach O the guy is semi-fast twitch

Finally, we're getting somewhere.

Thank you, PJ.

So, can we all agree that Luc, while not necessarily fast twitch, is definitely not slow twitch?

I don't think the issue is so much muscle twitch with luc as it is size... and for the record all people have slow and fast twitch muscles; nobody just has one or the other. there is only so fast you are going to move 240 pds around

i'm no twitch doctor or anything but from my rudimentary knowledge of fast and slow twitch muscle fibers i would say that luc's muscle mass would indicate a much higher percentage of fast twitch muscle fibers as opposed to the far leaner slow twitch variety.

Interesting.

So it's your contention that Luc may well be fast-twitch after all?
