The NCAA releases eligibility decisions to the public. If Johns has even applied for an exception, then they certainly have not ruled on it yet. Johns may be operating on the assumption that he will be granted an extra year, but given that the NCAA has never once given an exception for years missed while incarcerated for slingin' rock, it goes without saying that he would be making a HUGE assumption. There is no loophole to exploit.

Or maybe "Jimmy's cousin" simply doesn't know what he's talking about.

When you sign an LOI with a school, you can play four seasons worth of football. If you take a redshirt year, you have five years to play four seasons. If you are granted an exception by the NCAA (likely because of injury) you can potentially have a sixth year to complete your four seasons. It does not matter if you leave school for a few years (whether by choice or compulsion), your eligibility clock is still ticking. Occasionally, the NCAA grants exceptions for things like missions or military service. Serving a prison sentence has never earned an exception, and I doubt Johns will be receiving one.

So, Johns' eligibility clock starting ticking in 2005. He redshirted in 2005, so his eligibility would have expired following the 2009 season. Even if he'd been given an injury redshirt, he still would have only been eligible through the 2010 season.

So he won't be playing anywhere in 2012. Sorry, chief.
I'm going to read this post out loud to the dude I was with when Jimmy's cousin told us that about him picking who to play for with his last year eligibility. It sounds right. Thank you.

His great, great, great grandad was a pawnee warrior name Longjohns and was famous for inventing underwear that covered larger areas, yet made your package look bigger.
