Great guy for sure. I watched Spike's Midland Lee teams of the early 80's play some great games against Odessa Permian in the old stadium not far from First Baptist Church.

Spike told a great story about going to Clovis when he was a kid with his dad and mom. He'd never seen an elevator and his mom went to some beauty shop in the bank building...she rode the elevator to whatever level the shop was on. Spike and his dad escorted her to the elevator, watched her board, doors closed and they went to get a coke down the street at a cafe.

About an hour later they walked back to the bank at the appointed time to get mom. They waited patiently on the ground floor for mom when suddenly the elevator doors
opened and a good looking 20 year old blonde walked out. Spike's draw dropped, he turned to his dad and said "now I know why we drove all this way!"

That's not exactly how Spike told the story, but it's close. If you've ever met Spike, you can just see him telling that story with relish.

His Midland Lee teams ran a version of the wishbone but with lots more passing. They really stretched the edges of the field with speed at a time when it just wasn't done.

Those are some great memories.
