Loudest College Football Stadiums

Milo's post about Autzen made me wonder about this. So I'm asking those of you who have been to many loud stadiums, which is the loudest?

I have never been to a game at LSU, but from what I know, this seems to be the stadium that gets the most votes. I have heard teams like Clemson and Oregon throw their stadiums out there, as well as Tennessee, Florida, Ohio State, and Penn State. What are some other thoughts on this? And how can Autzen be so loud when the stadium is so small? Just wondering.

The seats at Autzen are incredibly close the field. I could probably have sent a good loogie from my seat to the O in the south endzone... But Reuben Droughns was standing directly in that line last night, so it's something I didn't really want to attempt.

Autzen is really compact and it has a roof structure that aids in the trapping of the sound. It's also basically built into a hill - or at least has a hill built up around it.

Beyond that, our fans are just fantastic.

I had several friends who played at Vandy, and to a man they would all vote for LSU.

Please keep in mind, however, that this was in the Dinardo days, and LSU actually had reason to get fired up for Vanderbilt. I'm not sure the Dores get the best effort from fans in Knoxville, Gainesville, Athens, or Tuscaloosa.

If you are saying what 50 yard line can get to the loudest decibel, I'd say Neyland is up there.
If you are saying what stadiums can sustain tons of sound for the longest, Neyland shouldn't be anywhere near the top 10.

LSU's Death Valley and Neyland are neck and neck. I've been to every stadium in the SEC except MSU.

The Swamp is a close second and Auburn is surprisingly loud.

I can't comment on Autzen as I have never been there (but I will be going when UT plays there, so I'll let you know)

Hey JG, have you been to the Shoe? For some reason I think I remember you saying you went to an OSU Michigan game. How does it compare? The loudest OSU game I've been to (I haven't been to that many) was the USC game this year. I'm sure it has been louder for games like Texas in the past and the big Michigan games of course.

Of the stadiums I have been to, LSU and Florida are neck and neck. UGA, Bama and UK are the only SEC stadiums left on my "to do" list.

Rose Bowl wasn't all that loud. I am planning on visiting Autzen in a few years though.

My ears were actually hurting at 'bama during the last game, but we at Neyland are close.

Haven't been to LSU; the rumor is that they are loudest in the SEC.

Commonwealth isn't anything to write home about, although it is better since they filled in the endzone.

Lexington is a pretty fun city, though. If you aren't dead set on watching the Vols play there, pick an October weekend. The weather is much better, and Keeneland runs.

ESPN's Ryen Russillo told Scott Van Pelt on the radio today that Autzen was the loudest stadium he had ever been in before pointing out that he visited the Shoe for the USC game earlier in the season.

Lloyd Carr has said something similar to that.

Oh yea, Carr and all of the Michigan fans were raving about our noise after that 03 game... Carr said it was the loudest he had ever been in, and there were some great quotes in the student paper...

“ Autzen's 59,000 strong make the Big House collectively sound like a pathetic whimper. It’s louder than any place I’ve ever been, and that includes The Swamp at Florida, The Shoe in Columbus, and Death Valley at Louisiana State. Autzen Stadium is where great teams go to die. ”
Michigan coach Lloyd Carr later said that Autzen Stadium was the loudest stadium he'd ever been in.

ESPN also had a good piece on stadium noise a few years back with a choice quote from Adrian Peterson on his experience at Oregon for the now infamous game.

edit - here:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3531112

"It was like some sort of crazy torture in the movies," Peterson says. "How do people do that so long without taking a breath? I think my ears are still ringing."
