Steve Spurrier on call-in show: 'I'm not a very good coach now'

Steve Spurrier’s not happy with what has transpired this season at preseason Eastern Division favorite South Carolina.

Crippled by the SEC’s worst defense, the Gamecocks (3-3) are no longer ranked and have squandered double-digit leads in the fourth quarter of consecutive games, both losses.

The Head Ball Coach was particularly candid with listeners during Wednesday’s weekly call-in show during the bye week.

“People always say, ‘What do you think when the fans *****?’ and I always say, ‘They should ***** about the way we are performing.’ I am embarrassed at times with the way we play,” Spurrier told host Todd Ellis.

Frustrated with his team’s performance, Spurrier suggested that he may have overestimated this season’s talent level and said it would be up to the players, not the coaching staff, to turn it around.

“Hell, I was a pretty good coach a couple years ago,” Spurrier said at one point. “I’m not a very good coach now.”

Often chipper during three straight 11-win seasons, his job hasn’t been as fun this fall. South Carolina’s last losing season came in 2003, two years before Spurrier’s arrival.

“I’m not going to turn it around … the players are going to have to turn it around,” Spurrier said. “We coach as hard as we can all the time. We are trying everything we can to put the best players on the field and put them in the best position.”

I hope Spurrier retires this year. He has had a great career, By staying he will not do himself or his team any favors.

His mediocre recruiting classes are starting to catch up with him. I dont' care how good of a coach you are, you cannot consistenly win in this league without recruiting at a high level. Yeah, he got a few great players like Clowney and Lattimore but top to bottom, South Carolina's recruiting classes haven't exactly been elite.

With the kind of money they make and hopefully bank, I don't know why anybody would want the hassle of coaching into their late 60s. One of the hidden blessings IMO for Fulmer is that he got forced out at 58.

He was only 58 when he left? I would have put 10 more years on him at least...

Not to mention its South freaking Carolina. Those top 15-20 classes are a miracle for that program.

I will be extremely sad the day he retires. Nobody quite like the OBC

I agree...so many coaches these days make the same nothing comments, I really enjoy how hinest he is - even when he takes jabs at UK.

Coach speak. He's trying to light a fire under his team while falling on the sword for his teams performance all in one interview. Really, it was quite brilliant. He'll stop coaching when they pack his dead azz off the field.

This makes no sense. He hasn't had a single top 10 recruiting class leading up to and including these past 3 11-win seasons. Right now he's sitting at #3. His recruiting has been fine.

He's had a few good seasons and he's working on a rebuilding one. It happens. He's still one of the best in the biz.

And I completely agree it's coach speak.

I'll admit it, I'm gonna miss him when he's gone.
