| NCAA to release sanctions/penalties against Penn State Monday Morning ESPN is reporting that the NCAA will release sanctions against PSU tomorrow morning at 9. The move is being called "unprecedented" by some close to the NCAA, but it's not clear if that means the death penalty or just because there was no committee on infractions process/hearing.

| Just now saw this in the other PSU thread. Mods merge if necessary, although maybe this could be the start of the PSU sanction commentary thread.

| All for the statue coming down. If the sanctions are a ban on football, not sure I agree with it. Saban had this right. Lets see what the program can currently do to help victim advocates. Taxing ticket sales, giving some proceeds to the victims, etc. I don't care if the program is financially hurt, but the program shouldn't be restricted from playing. Current players had nothing to do with it. |

| Joe Schad is reporting on the Twitter that it may include loss of scholarships and/or bowl ban and that it is expected to be "severe" but will NOT be the death penalty. |

| These are free so I assume it is okay to c&p. All from Schad's Twitter:
@schadjoe: Thee sanctions were not self-imposed or negotiated. This is Emmert taking a stand he felt he had to due to horrors in Freeh Report.
@schadjoe: Mark Emmert was granted authority to punish PSU in unprecedented manner by NCAA Board and Committee
@schadjoe: Penn State sanctions expected to be extremely harsh and could even be perceived as more damaging long-term than "death penalty" |

I have no clue what that could be, unless it involves scholarship and bowl suspensions for at least 5 years or so. Possibly even suspensions on funding/resources, but I don't know that the NCAA can legally do that.

I can't imagine anything else being unprecedented. Even a 10 scholarship/ban bowl while lengthy, is not unprecedented. |

That might be overstepping legal boundaries/contracts, and would also bring the Big 10 into the situation, penalizing them for something they weren't involved in.

I just am not sure what could be unprecedented other than length.
Jim Delaney is ALL about image. And this is bad for the Big 10. |

| Most likely bowl bans, schollie reductions - and possibly vacating wins. |

| Just my two cents but I think "unprecedented" may either be in reference to 1) the fact that this is happening without a Committee on Infractions hearing and/or 2) a conbination of severe penalties (e.g. longer bowl ban, scholly losses AND monetary penalties). |
