Not just speaking as a UT fan, but this really is pathetic and sad. They are so far away from our program and other big-time programs across the nation it's almost sickening to see a top recruit waste their time attending that University. Hopefully the talent in that city realizes the grass will always be greener on the other side compared to Memphis.

The only reason kids go there is to stay close to home. TN is a wide state

The word "dying" is used far too often. SMU died, Memphis is just in for a big setback. Too much money and life-long fans in that program for it to truly die, much like UT in some of it's darker days.

Give it a few years of mediocrity with no major NCAA violations, and a little help from Fred Smith's coffers and they will be eventually be back.

Nobody gives up that kind of money unless they want to
keep the truth out of the press.

Nope. They're dead. For a program to look like that and not have any NCAA penalties or sanctions is pathetic. Truly a B-Ball school, and they're even declining in that area too

The discussion is B-Ball, I don't know anything about the football side but a school that's been relevant on the national stage since the 1970's and has as large an endowment as their program does will not die because of a few bad years.

That's short-sighted thinking and the same thing that was said when the Larry Finch era came to a grinding halt and we know how that ended up. The money that they have behind them will inevitably lure another top level coach when this blows over

Seriously guys? The current Tiger basketball team is preseasoned ranked in the top 10. Pastner just recruited his second stellar class. Their program is far from dead. This situation with some Lawyers having filed a lawsuit will be a dead issue soon, not their program. To much tradition built in for that to happen.

Memphis Tigers excited about upcoming basketball season

Is the OP trying to say the Memphis basketball program is dying? Football, yes. But their basketball team is a preseason top 20 team of sophomores and freshmen after 2 top 10 recruiting classes. Last time they had a team like that, the signed and added a freshman named Rose and played in the Championship game.

You probably shouldn't lump their B-ball in with the football team though.

No one program, not ONE will survive off of just a solid basketball program. Collegiate athletics no longer exist. It is all about Football. Some people have no clue how much college football revenue rivals professional sports. The continuous advancement of college basketball will die without the continuous advancement of the football program. Even the BIG WIGS at Memphis know that. They look similar to a CEO operating a business under forecasted significant losses and trying to scrape up any lasting funds possible before their exit.

Who's the Derrick Rose of this Memphis class? Top prospects out of Memphis aren't rare, but they sure aren't enough to sustain a top notch basketball program. How many players out of Memphis were on Memphis's roster during the Calipari era?

Funny thing is, if they even tried to be good they would get a BigEast invitation. The BigEast is desperate right now, but as bad as Memphis is, not that desperate.

I think you misunderstand. Memphis made their title run with a talented group of recruits who matured in the system and then became upperclassmen...THEN they added a 1 and done Rose to Dorsey, Dozier, Douglas-Roberts, and Anderson (who were all upper classmen).

Memphis has reloaded and has a bunch of freshmen and sophomores who are building the momentum the way Douglas-Roberts and group did right before Rose came in. They are maybe one elite recruit in the next year or two away from being a top 3 team.

Ok when they get that top recruit and advance to the Final Four come talk to me. Your post is based on either fortune telling or fantasy. Neither one successfully disputing my argument.

The majority of lawsuits are settled out of court. There are a myriad of reasons as to why. Not least of which, it is often less expensive to settle than to fight an extended court case, regardless of whether the defendant feels they are in the right.

Will you admit that your opinion is just as likely as the opinion you quoted?

It's a known fact that Calipari recruited outside of Memphis and his relationship with area HS coaches was not great. However; when you look at the basketball players that have come out of Memphis over the years it's enought to sustain a great team. The issue for UT is they have never been able to sale it's program to the top tier kids coming out of Memphis. Below are just a sampling of talent from the Bluff City. Imagine if this talent had been right here in Knoxville.

Anfernee Hardaway
Willam Bedford
Larry Finch
John Gunn
Ronnie Robinson
Keith Lee (West Memphis)
Lorenzen Wright
Thaddeus Young
Vincent Askew
Andre Turner

Memphis is dying. They know about the finances between Calipari and recruits. They threated Calipari because thier program is dying without him. Memphis takes the case to court even though there are no real grounds for suing. Case is settled out of court. Yea Calipari and Rose must love just giving money away.

Of course. That was precisely my point. The person I quoted said that the only reason one would settle like that is to keep something out of the press. I was merely stating that settling frequently happens in lawsuits and can be for a variety of reasons...many of which are not to silence information, while some are. Who knows which this one is?
