I was watching ESPN Classic the other day and they were replaying the National Championship between Georgia and Notre Dame from 1981. I am 31 and I got into college football back in the mid 90ís when Nebraska was playing their best. After watching the 1981 game, it seems to me that the quality and the discipline, even the officiating that we see in college football today is superior to the level that was exhibited in the 1981 Sugar Bowl. Something that I picked up on with both the Bulldogs and the Irish was a lot of movement on the offensive line. I was expecting flags to come out but, no flag. The tackling seemed to be sloppy compared to what we see now.
Some things that I thought may account for this is
1) The officials actually let the boys play the game, instead of flagging every little thing
2) The coaching is much better now
3) We, as fans, expect more NFL like perfection out of our college teams.
What do you all think?
