Admissions departments at numerous D1 institutions do indeed utilize the interview process for athletes and non-athletes alike (in fact, it was the interview process that kept Ron Mercer from matriculating at Vandy). There are, however, several objective indicators that virtually all admissions departments utilize to determine suitability of a prospective student. While the indicators tend to be standardized, the manner in which they are viewed varies by school. Unfortunately, at some schools, the athletic department is allowed to interfere in the admissions process. Often this works out - no harm no foul; but when it doesn't, it typically leads to a tragic situation.
I am not saying this happened in this case; just somewhat disturbed at the cavalier attitude of posters who act like they hope it did.
