| Hospitals: why I hate them. On June 23rd my son was born. It was an awesome day despite the hospital staff. The Doctor was a jerk and was rarely there, the nurses forgot to put in the food order for my wife and I went to the cafe for the first 4 meals, when they went to take off the security bracelet from my son when we were ready to go home....they realized that they had never put it on. These are just a few of the retarded things that occurred.
3 weeks later I am in pain all day at work. I can handle a fair amount of pain, I have Crohn's disease and feel bad nearly every day-but this was different. Later that night I was convinced it was appendicitis and we went to the ER. A CT confirmed my suspicions and I was taken taken into surgery 5 minutes after they told me the test results. My surgeon said that it would take 45 minutes and I would be good as knew. Nearly 4 hours later, I'm out of surgery...seems that the appendix was ruptured and my Crohn's made it more complicated. The hospital staff was horrible...It was 3 days before anyone changed my sheets (I was running a 103* fever) and even then it only happened when my wife called. Finally, after a week-they let me go home. After a week at home, I went back to work but I just never felt right. I had fevers every night and the pain wasn't going away. 3 weeks later I came home early from work in severe pain and with another 103* fever. Another trip to the ER and another CT scan and my surgeon informs me that I had developed abscesses. Now, I can understand complications-but I had just complained about how I was feeling to him 3 days earlier. anyway, after drying to clear the problem up with drugs for a week....in the hospital, they decided I need another surgery. My surgeon assures me that this will be the last one and I will be good as new. His plan was to drain the abscesses and put in a drain out of my side for a while. This worked great for about 3 days....then my intestines decided to send everything through the drain instead of the natural highway. Guess what? Two weeks into my hospital stay...another surgery. My surgeon comes into my room to tell me that he should have taken out part of my intestines from the first surgery but he didn't and that now he needs to do that. This surgery was a much bigger deal. Huge incision, ICU for 3 days, more pain meds than my mother in law (a chief ICU nurse for 20 years) has ever seen given. After another 2 weeks in the hospital I was sent home.
Now, at the risk of this becoming a GSV length political post let me recap:
5 weeks in the hospital not seeing my newborn son.
3 surgeries
1 surgeon
40 lbs off of a 170 pound man lost.
but that's not all folks, my surgeon took my staples out too fast and now my incision has developed an infection and ruptured...and we're talking about a 6 inch incision down the center of my stomach. I am more than frustrated with my surgeon....it's now been almost 3 months and I'm not better. I have already gotten a second opinion on the incision and they said it didn't look good....my surgeon keeps saying it's normal-but I think he's covering his butt!
So, that's why I haven't been around people. I've browsed from my blackberry when I could, but I've just not had the energy to post. I hope everyone else had a much better summer and I hope that crompton is miraculously healed as well. |
