With winds of change blowing at gale force, The Trap turns its attention to the stronger of the two SEC divisions. Here…we…go.
1. Florida. Billy Donovan’s troops missed the NCAA Tournament last year. That won’t be a concern in ‘08-’09. Nick Calathes and Walter Hodge will provide leadership to a strong freshmen class. The boys from Gainesville will return to the top of the league.
2. Tennessee. Bruce Pearl has the league’s best player in Tyler Smith. He has a talented group of newcomers. He does not, however, have a proven point guard. If Daniel West becomes eligible, the Vols will win the East. The bet here is that he doesn’t and they don’t.
3. Kentucky. Billy Gillispie also has issues at point guard. If the Wildcats find an answer there, they have the pieces to win the SEC. Patrick Patterson will challenge Smith for SEC POY honors.
4. Vanderbilt. Kevin Stallings has to replace Shan Foster. That won’t be easy. The Commodores do welcome the best recruiting class of the Stallings Era. Andrew Ogilvy and Jermaine Beal are the key returnees from last year’s squad.
5. South Carolina. My gut says there is a prettygood chance that the Gamecocks will be the surprise team of the SEC. Devan Downey is a star. I won’t be surprised if Darrin Horn’s first squad finishes ahead of Vanderbilt.
6. Georgia. Dennis Felton saved his job with a magical run to the SEC Tournament title. He brings in the best group of recruits he has ever signed in Athens. That said, the smart money is that the ‘Dogs finish last in the East and someone else will be patrolling the sidelines for UGA in ‘09-’10.
