The Halfcourt Trap 1/16

The Halfcourt Trap Vol I, No. 23.

The Trap hits Knoxville for two huge showdowns for the Vols. With that in mind, I figured I’d share 6 of my fondest Tennessee home game basketball moments.

1. Watching Charles Barkley and Chuck Person walking in Stokely Center as fans taunted The Round Mound Of Rebound with pizza boxes.
2. Watching Dale Ellis and Dominique Wilkins trade shots in some classic battles in the early ’80s. A prelude to future NBA stardom for both.
3. Dale Brown antagonizing Tennessee fans like no coach I’ve ever seen. Tennessee’s upset of the Shaq led Tigers in 1991 is still one of the most baffling things I’ve ever seen in sport.
4. The Chris Jackson-Allan Houston shootout in 1990. Two of a generation’s best shooters burning the house down. 119-113 says it all.
5. Bruce Pearl on January 21, 2006: “This is your basketball team, and we’re going to kick Florida’s ass.” SEC basketball has never been the same.
6.Tennessee hammering the soon to be two time National Champions in the ‘07 home finale. The best atmosphere for basketball in the history of Thompson-Boling Arena.

Until next week, stay classy, Volnation.

The best atmosphere for basketball in the new arena was when Tennessee beat The Russian National Team on a last second shot. I believe it was a Sunday night following a home football win over Kentucky. I believe it was only the second year the new arena was open, could have been the first ?

I’m pretty sure the win over the Russians was prior to the ‘88-’89 season. Travis Henry’s one moment of UT glory.
