Jabriel Washington: local spotlight

in Tennessee Vols Football Recruiting

For new Tennessee Vol head coach Derek Dooley the state of Tennessee looks to be a key state in his early recruiting plan. In 2010 the Vols were able to secure the state’s best offensive lineman in four-star offensive tackle James Stone out of Maplewood High school.

For 2011 the Vols are going to be putting a hard press on ESPN top 150 watchlist member Jabriel Washington (Jackson, TN/Trinity Christian Academy).

Washington is a 5’10 165 pound athlete that plays running back and corner in high school but is getting looks to play all over the field in college.

“I am being looked at to play running back, wide receiver, kick returner, punt returner, corner, and even safety for college,” explained Washington.

For the Vols Washington isn’t very sure where he is being looked at but does think it is running back and hopes to have some questions answered at an up coming Junior day at Tennessee on the 27th.

“I am going to up Tennessee to check out the Junior day on the 27th,” said Washington.

“Before the UT junior day I am also going down to Alabama for their junior day on the 20th. For Tennessee though I am looking to meeting the new staff that is in place.”

For Washington and many top 2011 prospects this will be the first time to meet with Dooley and the rest of his staff and for Washington he thinks it will be a good chance for bonding.

“I have spoken only once with the staff but I already got a good feeling on them. They seem like coaches who care about the players and that is a key thing for me when picking a school. I could see my self playing for that staff already.”

Washington will certainly have his pick of the litter when it comes to picking a college.

Alabama recently offered this talented back as well as cal, Clemnson, Colorado, Duke, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Carolina, USC, and Vanderbilt.

“I just got offered by Alabama and that is one I am pretty excited about since they just won the state title. The visit down there in a couple of weeks should be a good one for me.”

As a junior Washington played both quarterback and running back where he threw for 1,255 yards and 11 touchdowns while also rushing for 867 yards on the ground.

Washington said right now he has a top five and that includes Tennessee. The other schools are Georgia, LSU, Alabama and Ohio State.
